Home Business Success
Melissa Heuermann of Kids & Color
Kids & Color began just 6 short months ago out of a desire to incorporate two of my favorite things; children and clothing.
I already had an established Antiques business and although I have a passion for collecting, it wasn't nearly as fulfilling as I had expected.
Hence, after a lot of thinking, researching, setting up business licenses, Tax ID, and deciding on self funding, my plan was set into motion.
With three children (12 year old daughter, and 3 year old B/G twins) I needed the flexibility of working out of my home office so I could spend as much time with them as possible.
Although it is difficult at times to juggle the kids and everyday business aspects, it is truly rewarding to have both.
Self funding my business has been the riskiest obligation I took on, especially through the infancy phase. However, I sought management advise from other business owners, suppliers, and also received a lot of invaluable business tips from my wonderful friend and webmaster.
As business is slowly expanding, we are now the exclusive USA supplier of a colorful line of clothing from the UK.
We recently purchased the infant, toddler, and kids sections of Fuddleduds.com and are currently focusing on promoting our name and products.
I believe networking with other businesses, cross promoting, collaborating and bartering have all been influential in our success.
My advice to women just starting out would be to research the market thoroughly, seek advice from other business owners, work on financial backing, and be aware of the risks involved in your particular venture. Most importantly, follow your dreams and enjoy what you do!
There will always be disappointments and new problems to solve, however, part of the satisfaction of being successful, is being equipped to overcome adversity and conquering your failures.
