Never Give Up Your Dreams

by Gin Wilburn
(Kentucky)

In two days it will be one year since I quite my job after 26 years of service to help care for my elderly father. The first six months, I devoted my time almost exclusively to his needs and enjoying his companionship. This was especially important to me since my Dad suffers from dementia.

After six months had passed, I began thinking about the prospects of starting my own business. While still continuing to care for my Dad's needs, I moved forward in my decision. I developed a business plan and applied for my LLC. Shortly after the paperwork had been submitted, I was suddenly thrust into unexpected territory.

Circumstances in my stepmother's health radically changed and she had to go live with her son's family. It was at this point that the decision was made for my Dad to come live with me due to advancement in his dementia.

Soon after my Dad moved in with me, I received my LLC paperwork in the mail. My emotions had been flying high like a cloud when I applied for my LLC; however, during the transition process all thoughts of my business had vanished and the brown envelope containing my dream seemed to serve as a barrier forbidding entry to my dream.

With the passage of time, Dad adapted to his new home life and my dream resurfaced. I felt the sparks of excitement when my thoughts began shifting to my business. Slowly as time permitted, I began my business journey once again. With slow steps moving forward, my business has begun its transformation into filling the chapters of my dream. Still a long way from achieving my goals, but with diligence and determination I know I shall persevere.

My mother used to tell me that behind every cloud there is a silver lining. How true her advice rings in the path of my life. When I stop to reflect upon the unfolding events in my life, I realized how truly blessed I am to have my elderly father in my life.

The cloud has now drifted by and I can clearly see the silver lining by having my father with me, but there is something that my mother forgot to reveal to me. She could have told me that business is just like life. There are valleys and mountains that we must overcome and perhaps along the way we may lose sight of our dreams, but the most important thing is never to give up. Be diligent and determined and you will persevere and achieve success. Just never give up your dreams for success begins with dreams!
