Three Fears that Prevent Women from Pursuing a Small Home Business Idea

For many women who are unaccustomed to thinking like entrepreneurs, starting a small home based business idea may seem like an incredibly daunting task! We're not taught to think like business owners, and so when we face risk, it feels like too much. For women who are used to subsisting on a regular salary, the thought of not having a regular stream of income is overwhelming. We may have a multitude of small home business ideas, but most of these will never see the light of day, because we are afraid!

Unfortunately, many women cannot find the support or the training to follow through on their small business idea. Some women may feel they lack the courage or the imagination to succeed. When you look at the situation from a practical standpoint, there just may seem like too many obstacles in your path. These are the top three fears that prevent women from pursuing an otherwise good small home business idea:

  • Not enough capital. This is one of the primary obstacles many women face in starting a home based business. After all, what business can begin without capital? What many women forget is that a home based business requires less capital than other, more traditional business models. After all, you already have your headquarters and office, in your home! So you have already saved money on that, and in addition you can benefit from many home based business tax deductions. With a small home business, your overhead is drastically reduced.

  • Too risky. This is what really scares most of us. Receiving a salary is "comfortable." As long as you go to work and achieve a few standard goals, you can be sure of getting a regular paycheck. At least, that's how the thinking goes. But did you ever stop to reflect that it is the "comfortable" salary that presents the real risk? By saying that a home business is too risky, you are assuming that your job is completely safe, and that you have this job for life. Unless you own the company though, that's probably not true. In other words, by thinking that you are secure, you might neglect to prepare for the future - an all too common mistake.

  • Will take too much work. This is another reason that many women decide against opening their own business. It DOES take work. Here's a thought ... if you choose a business that you LOVE, then it won't seem like work! AND, if you feel that your small home business idea will take too much work, it most probably will! Your expectations may get in your way even before you begin. If your idea will help you reach your dreams, then why should a little honest work scare you? Yes, you have limited time to enjoy this beautiful planet of ours, and the only way you will be able to do that is if you work towards your dreams. If you have a good small home business idea, why not give it a try? You never know: this just might be the first step to the rest of your dreams!
