Free and Low Cost Stress Relief Tips

Stress happens even when you have the benefit of working at home in your own business. Here are some free and low cost stress relievers that don't require any fancy gizmos or expensive investments!

So you're now working at home in your own business, but you still experience stress! Your stresses may be different than when you were working at a job, but but they are still challenges that can cause tension, worry and stress. Stress is a part of all of our lives, especially in these times of accelerated change. Sometimes stress in our lives can accumulate and cause you to feel drained and tense. Sometimes stress can even contribute to illness.

Nowadays, all of us face increased stress because of the rapid changes occuring in today's world. Luckily there are many simple and natural things you can do to help alleviate stress so that it doesn't overcome your life. Sometimes all it takes is a moment of awareness where you realize that your shoulders are up to my ears and your jaw is clenched! Then you can remember to relax and breathe and perhaps take a moment to look outdoors at the trees.

Events Beyond Our Control

One of the greatest stressors in life is finding yourself helpless in a difficult situation. You are experiencing events that you didn't ask for that you cannot control. Even positive experiences like getting married or having a child can cause stress because of the significant life changes that occur.

Some events are minor stressors... your car gets a flat tire, your boss yells at you, the supermarket is crowded, one of your kids gets into trouble at school.

Some events have a more major impact because they cause unexpected changes in your life... you're laid off from your job, a family member becomes disabled, you have to sell your house.

There are traumatic and extreme events that go beyond stress, that are times of personal crisis... a loved one dies, you experience an earthquake or other natural disaster, or you discover you have a serious illness. The suggestions we offer here will mostly apply to the first two kinds of life stress. For times of crisis, simple stress management or nutritional support is not enough. In all instances of stress however, finding a way to eventually accept the things that you cannot change is key. This does not mean giving up your choices in life, but it means actively choosing to not avoid the painful experiences. This is easier said than done, but eventually brings greater peace. This does not mean you will not feel pain, anger, or grief in difficult situations, but it does mean that you will not be avoiding your feelings.

Stress Relievers

Here are some free and low cost tips to reduce stress in your life.

  • Having trouble sleeping? Try taking a barefoot stroll outside in the grass. The well known herbalist Dr. Christopher discovered that this simple remedy releases static electricity from the body and helps you relax and fall asleep.

  • Massage your feet! A good foot rub benefits your whole body. Or better yet, have someone else do it! Also, apply gentle pressure to sore spots which will help eliminate toxins in the body.

  • Take a warm bath in pure Lavender essential oil.

  • Don't hold your feelings inside. When emotions start building up, talk to a trusted friend who will listen empathetically without judgements. Sometimes a good cry can really help reduce tension.

  • Stretch! Go outside and move around freely. Make funny faces! Play with your children. Take a walk in the fresh air.

  • Find support. You don't need to do it all alone!

  • Laugh! Humor can lighten a heavy load. I watch comedy shows on TV which always helps me forget my troubles.

  • Spend time in nature, or listen to nature sounds. The sunlight, the feel of wind, fresh air, the sound of rushing water, and birds chirping are all nature's gifts to us.
  • Set limits. Make sure you have enough time in your life for you! You deserve it, and this will benefit everyone in your life because you will be less stressed out.

  • As much as you can, eat a healthy and balanced diet with plenty of fruits and veggies. Sugar and caffeine actually deplete the body's energy reserves. Try to keep your blood sugar even by eating plenty of fiber, and having regualr meals with enough protein.

  • Take high quality nutritional supplements in liquid form which is much more rapidly absorbed, especially when you are under stress. Stress depletes your body's supply of essential nutrients which makes you feel more frazzled and actually can lead to food cravings and overeating. Good supplements can actually help normalize your appetite as well as help you feel better.

  • Let go of those things in your life that you no longer need. Clear out, make space, and get rid of clutter which amplifies stress.

  • It's not always easy, but try to find a place of acceptance within yourself for those things you cannot change.
